TGA offered its first after school golf program in the fall of 2003. We started in only five schools, offering programs wherever we safely could – inside a gym, outdoors on a blacktop, a large grass field, a small grass field and even a parking lot.
The sixth school to commit was Village School in Pacific Palisades, a small private school with no grass and their outdoor blacktop was accounted for each afternoon.
I toured the campus with the school administrator, Mona Woolard, to try and find a place to conduct the program. The widest space I could find was an open, outdoor hallway with columns every 15ft. I thought to myself, what the heck, let’s give it a shot!
I went home, created the flyer and modified the curriculum based on a maximum of 16 students. I called the school a week before the first class and we had 12 students registered. I couldn’t believe it!
I called the school again three days before our session was scheduled to begin and we had sold out! Then, a day prior to class starting, the school called me saying a parent was begging to add their child to the roster. I couldn’t say no.
I remember getting off that phone call thinking TGA has a real opportunity to change the after school market and the sport of golf. If 17 parents signed up their kids for $165 for a golf program conducted in a hallway, then we were on to something. Turns out the shot we took was successful because we signed three other schools within five miles of Village School over the next six months.
The rest is TGA history.
*Mona Woolard, who facilitated our first program at Village School in 2003 passed away in 2009. She was an amazing spirit who welcomed golf in a hallway with open arms. I will never forget her checking on the program the first few weeks encouraging the students and thoroughly enjoying the program. She is greatly missed.
